D. E. Swain was the Post Master and ran the General Store in Bascom, Montana, a tiny town 6 miles east of Melstone, for over twenty years. He is well documented. You can find Business Directory listings for Swain from the early teens to the early 1930's. See, for example, the 1914, 1920, 1922, and 1933 Montana Bradstreets. A copy of Swain's 1920 listing is provided below. Bascom had a population of about 25 in the teens and 1920'a and it was down hill from there. The town...and Swain...who had become the town's only only merchant... disappeared in the mid 1930's.
